Iconic English Green Telephone Box – Light Trails
I discovered this rare, stunning, English, Green Telephone Box at Fangdale Beck, Bilsdale. This is a beautiful area of North Yorkshire, England.
The British Telephone box is iconic throughout the World.
In the early 1900’s English phone boxes were so many different colours. Then, to mark George V’s Silver Jubilee, the company who ran the telephone network, the General Post Office, decided to paint them all red.
This telephone box is Green, due to the hard work and efforts of a man called Fred Jackson. He used to work at the Telephone Manager’s Office in Middlesbrough, as a Sales Executive. Fred sold most of his phones to Dales Farmers in the area in the late 1940’s and early 1950’s. Fred wanted this specific Telephone Box to be painted green because of the outstanding natural beauty of the area. He made an unusual, special agreement, with the local Landowner to have a Green Telephone Box installed.
I happened by, late one Sunday afternoon, 14 November 2021, after my visit to Rievaulx, to photograph my Red Telephone Box, and stopped dead in my tracks. I loved this shade of Green. I loved the golden Crown adorning the top of the box, representing the British Government. This kiosk was fascinating and I was drawn to it. Curiously, I opened the door, went inside and breathed in the memories of my childhood days. I had only ever seen red telephone kiosks before now. This Green box stood on a beautiful country corner, off a main road. Traffic on the main road was whizzing past at very high speeds. I wasn’t sure how I was going to get my photograph, as I was literally taking my life into my hands, setting up my tripod, at the road junction, in the dark. I could see car headlights. I could hear the roaring engines of traffic journeying in both directions. Even so, if a vehicle decided to turn the corner sharply, then that could be it for me! Those of you who know me, by now know that I love a challenge! I am a risk taker! All in the name of Photography! I was determined to capture an image of this Green Telephone Kiosk, no matter what it took!
I was hungrily taking photos, when I saw a car belting down the road and noticed its indicator on to turn, down this quiet, country lane. I didn’t move, I stayed grounded to the spot, unflinching, using my Mobile phone torch to signal my presence. I suddenly thought about the car lights, lighting up the telephone box and my excitement turned to the possibility of creating a light trail. In an instant, I set my camera up on a long exposure. Click! This was the moment. I waited for the image to show on my screen! Wow! Just to see this rare, iconic Green British Telephone box now captured in an image, frozen forever in time, with these impressive light trails, makes me a very happy man indeed. …
