Roll over Pussy Cat!
You are probably wondering why in the world this photo is called “Proud”? Let me explain.
Clock ticking, and on count-down to the end of my mission, not to save the world, but to conquer love. For a loved one, who loves animals, especially Lions, I was looking to bring her happiness by making a gift to her of a Lion photo.
This woman is a fan of the Lion King movie and musical. Other films that she has watched are The Lion, the Witch and The Wardrobe, African Cats, The Ghost and the Darkness and Madagascar. She told me you just have to watch Born Free as your life is not whole until you do.
Put any movie in front of her with Lions in it, and she will be glued to the TV.
Wanting to satisfy her desire, I quizzed her about what kind of photo she wanted. She told me that she really wanted a large, cool photo, to hang over her fireplace. Something with a Wow factor! Something to set off conversations! She wanted an African, male Lion with a big, shaggy, mane and some lovely eyes!
My challenge had been set. I needed that gift.
Worrying that I would not find her Lion, in the name of passion and romance I began my search, like a King in search of treasure for his Queen.
Pumped full of adrenaline, nervous, excited and hopeful, all at the same time, for achieving my goal of getting a great capture of a magnificent Lion, I set off on my journey.
In the distance I spotted my Lion. I heard him, before I saw him, as he was roaring. This was a magnificent show of power. He was using a muscular motion, and jerking his body, like us having giant hiccups. His deep, reverberating call was low-pitched and resonated for many miles. This was a mysterious sound to my ears. This Lion had sensed my presence and smelt my human scent a long time before I felt and smelt his. Was he hungry? Had he eaten?
As he came closer, the sight of him made me stop in my tracks. He was roaring with all his might. His head was tilted back, and his mouth was so wide that through my camera lens I could see his incisors, canines and carnassial teeth. I imagined that my head, with room to spare, would fit very easily inside of his!
Vigilent and intolerant of trespassers, he is the stealthiest of hunters. Lordly, massive and muscular, he is truly intimidating!
Looking so majestic, strong and mighty, I had an overwhelming urge to want to reach out and touch him, to stroke his fine head and body, to run my fingers through his glorious fur to feel whether he was course or soft, for he had the best, gratified yellow-gold coat. His voluminous mane was so grand and majestic. It was flowing, bright and lustrous, it was dense and so long.
Through my camera lens, this proud Lion fascinated me from the minute I clapped my eyes on him. It was an intensely emotional moment. I was charmed. He was just the most stunning animal, a Kingly beast.
However, everything looked like the odds were stacked against me, because this King of the Jungle was looking tired and reflective and kept yawning. He yawned and yawned, and he kept on licking himself with his huge, lengthy, pink tongue, as rough as sandpaper, cleaning himself.
From my lens I could literally see the spines on his tongue and deep into the back of his mouth. I shuddered, and was covered in goosebumps, the hairs rising on my arms, thinking that if he were to get hold of me, that would be it!
He has a beautiful, almost black nose, with the pink coloration from when he was a Cub having now almost all been joined up, like connect the dots. His mouth is perfectly formed and he has long, wispy, whiskers. His muzzle is fantastic, like a fingerprint to us, it is unique to him alone.
Even though he looks like a version of a house cat, albeit a giant one, I am reminded of his greatness as his roars, not purrs, and controlled lurching movements continue for some time.
Waiting for a more peaceful and composed image, I stood rooted to my spot.
Tasting the danger in the air from his presence. He is strong and has charisma and a distinct prowess of leadership. His personality shines.
My understanding awakens, at that moment, standing there before him, and I see why he symbolizes courage, justice, majesty, military might and strength and why the Lion symbol also denotes aggression, might, power and royalty.
Hand-holding my camera, with my longest lens, I start taking lots of photos of him, trying hard to get the composition just right for my gift.
Suddenly, taking me by surprise, he stands tall and rigid, looking at me, staring me right in the eyes. His eyes piercing into my very soul, like glowing orange jewels, and he melts me. He is graceful. He is stunning. He is, above all else, Lordly and Proud. It was a hypnotic moment. It was so astonishing that I felt my heartbeat pumping fast and strong. At this precise moment I felt like it was a Godly intervention, as he is standing to attention, just for me, on that spot, with majesty and military might, like a General.
Recoiling his lovely pink tongue, not quite fully retracting it into his mouth, I realize that this pose will make the perfect image. I love it that a lovely piece of his pink tongue shows enticingly through his fine muzzle. At that very moment, filled with inspiration, and the wonderful spectacle in front of me, I know that the time has come for me to take this one and only, important, photo that I need to make my art. CLICK! I have captured the very soul of this Lion, as he has captured mine.
Being able to freeze this moment in time meant everything to me. I was so happy to be able to produce this photo, which can be experienced by a loved one who has always dreamed of owning such a photo.
I also found a stuffed, material, Lion which I purchased as a gift to give my Love, along with the photo I had taken for her. She was thrilled with the present.
When I asked her what the Lion’s name was, she had no hesitation in telling me that, as he looks so full of pride, she is going to call him ‘Proud’.
