About this Photo

This is one of my happy places. In a world of constant change and uncertainty, I like to capture those early morning, quiet moments, to create a timeless atmosphere and so I journeyed 302 miles to get to Glencoe and Blackrock Cottage. Having read in the papers that it was going to be cold and snowing in Scotland, I prepared for harsh weather. My base camp was a log cabin, and I got up in the early hours of the morning, layering up my clothing, to face the crisp air and silence of those early hours. Taking in a short icy breath, which made my eyes water, and feeling my nose numbing, I set off on my adventure and the challenge of getting to this magical setting prior to tourists and climbers arriving. This photograph was taken about an hour after sunrise. The doors of the cottage were painted a brilliant red and the sky was a beautiful, intense, blue with milk clouds. The mountains were marbled in snow. I stopped dead in my tracks, as my eyes were being led into this awesome, atmospheric, scene, with character of the clouds and I knew, there and then, standing in front of this iconic cottage, depicting the stunning Scottish landscape of Glencoe, in the Scottish Highlands, that I had the perfect, composition. It is almost impossible to get this photograph with no people in it, once the sun has risen. This is one of my favorite images and, not surprisingly, one which occupies a prominent position in my living room.
