Venice – Doge’s Palace Sunrise
Have you ever visited Venice? If so, you will know and remember fondly its outstanding beauty, if not, maybe you will go there one day, and for now I want to transport you to this fantastic city, where I wanted to go for a long, long time and it was impossible, but after many years of hoping, I got my adventure! I got to see some of the best scenery in the world. I felt a burning desire to make something beautiful and uplift people!
My passion is my photography, which I work on full-time, and my vision is to transport you into my photos, which freeze time, encapsulating the moment and the memory.
My story concentrates on the iconic Doges Palace, with its stunning architecture, built in Venetian Gothic style in 1340, linked to the rise of Venice, one of the main landmarks in Venice, Northern Italy, and one of the two most famous sights of the city, majestically situated on St Mark’s Square, the principal square, and the Grand Canal. Once the historic seat of power for over 700 years, housing prison cells, including Casanova’s (the famous scoundrel and lover) in the Bridge of Sighs, now housing treasures and paintings by Titian, Tintoretto and Veronese.
Odds were stacked against me, as Venice had been in flood, the rain kept on coming and there were massive crowds - you could barely walk in some places without people bumping into you.
Adventure was waiting. Weaving my way along the back streets of Venice, I arrived at St. Mark’s Square, prior to sunrise, one morning in November 2019. Because it was still so early, the square was empty, save for a handful of tourists, taking photos of the Grand Canal, who I decided I wanted to be in my image.
Why don’t you come on the next part of the journey with me?
Imagine standing in the most famous square in the world and it being almost desolate of people. An eerie silence to an otherwise busy and noisy city. But you are happy to have no-one around you for once.
Suddenly, the darkness changes and the light is amazing. The sun is rising quickly and is producing a beautiful glow in the sky and a pink tinge to the area I had set up a composition to take a photo of. You can start to feel the warmth that the sun is bathing you in.
You can see, sitting high on a stone column, the bronze statue of the ‘Lion of Venice’, an ancient bronze winged sculpture, which symbolised Venice.
Beautiful, atmospheric, twinkling light is coming from the pretty street-lamps, casting their reflections onto St. Mark’s Square.
The Gondola stations, with elegant Gondolas moored onto the old wooden mooring posts, stand, motionless, on the lovely, calm, blue waters of the Grand Canal.
The fabulously ornate fortress structure, of the Doges Palace with its stone pointed arches, rib vault and flying buttress, herringbone pattern wall, with its own lighting still on, is now distinct and dazzling to see, in the splendid light of this new day, making you want to breath it all in.
I hope you enjoyed the journey and my captured image.
This is where the magic comes from.
