Wake Up Venice !
Venice fuels my imagination with its centuries old, almost unchanged, romantic photographic locations, which enable me to produce work which I am truly passionate about. I am so attracted to this fascinating city that it allows me to transport myself into another era. My photography focuses on taking you through the image, and I am keen to work on creating images, with the absence of people, and transport, unless they serve to enhance my work.
When it was in flood in Winter 2019, I was staying in this wonderful city. While most of Venice was sleeping, I had been out on an adventure taking photographs all over this delightful city.
My obstacles were the rain, people and large boat traffic. The rain continued to fall, on and off. Each day I did not know if the waters were going to rise again and hamper my discoveries. It was touch and go for my photography. Venice is free of automobiles, however there were people everywhere, and so many boats - the magnificent Gondolas (my favorite), working boats, the Vaporettos (water buses) and the gigantic cruise ships.
Leaving my accommodation, in the early hours of the morning, I was on a mission to get a beautiful image of the Giudecca Canal in the heart of Venice, without people and without boats. Weaving my way through the labyrinth of narrow, charming, streets, over pretty, ancient bridges, some lit by old fashioned street lamps, I felt like I had been transported in a time capsule, back over many centuries to an old Venice, as the city has not altered much over hundreds of years. Venice has been inspirational for artists and adventurers, since it was built, and I imagined living there, in those days gone by, going about my everyday business and seeing Casanova, Antonio Vivaldi, Marco Polo, Carlo Goldoni, Tintoretto and Canaletto.
It was cold and dark when I arrived at my destination, standing on the edge of this famous waterway. Not knowing what type of day Venice would wake up to, I set up my camera gear and tested a few shots, then waited patiently for the darkness to fade and the morning to start to wake up.
Suddenly an incredible sight appeared, unfolding, right in front of my eyes
There was a wonderfully calm dawn by the Giudecca Canal, bathed in special light, giving a mystic atmosphere.
Click! Captured and frozen in time. I took this image of the old, unused, mooring posts, which add a symmetrical interest, in the foreground of the photo, with the beautiful San Giorgio Maggiore church in the distance. The rising sun was so bright, like a firework going off.
Artists have been wild about Venice over hundreds of years and Henry James compared it to an ‘orange gem resting on a blue glass plate’.
This photo tells a story in its own right. It takes the breath away.
This is where the magic comes from.
